The Greatest Discovery

Discover for yourself that the Lord is kind. Come to Him for protection, and you will be glad.

Psalm 34:8

I love to discover new things, whether that's a new place to go and see, a new food to try or a new friend. When you discover something there is this realisation that it will make a difference to your life. Psalm 34:8 talks about the most important discovery I've made.

To understand this verse we'll split it into 4 parts. The first bit really caught my attention - 'discover for yourself '- the only way you are going to truly believe what this verse says is by experiencing it for yourself. It's no good just hearing about it from others, you need to find this out. It's like when your Mum bakes a batch of brownies. You're sitting in your living room watching T.V. and you can smell the sweet chocolate. Then your brother comes in with chocolate on his fingers and tells you how these are the greatest brownies in the world. You can smell the brownies and hear about how great they are from someone else but the only way you are going to see what they truly taste like is if you take one and put it in your own mouth. Go and find this out for yourself.

So what are you discovering? 'Discover for yourself that the Lord is kind.' I think we use the word 'kind' quite lightly. Some dictionaries put it like this: if someone is kind they are friendly, generous and considerate. God is a friend. We can sometimes think of God as this far off person in the sky and doesn't really know that much about us, but He is the opposite. He knows every detail about you and is interested in you. Just like you tell your friend about what you did at the weekend, you can talk to God about what's going on in your life. God is generous. Think about all the blessings He has given you. A home, food on the table, friends, family, every single breath you take. He has given all this to you and those are just the basics. God is also considerate. He loves you more than you can ever imagine and He wants the very best for you. He sent His son, Jesus, to die for you so that you don't have to be separated from God because of your sin.

So we've looked at what you are discovering but how do you discover for yourself that the Lord is kind? Here's the answer - 'come to Him for protection'. Life's tough, I know that. Sometimes you don't even know why you're upset or angry but God can help you through those days. God invites you to come to Him for protection, no matter what situation you find yourself in. Rely on His strength, talk to Him about what you are facing. God will protect you. And when God protects you, you will see for yourself that He is kind.

One last part - 'and you will be glad'. You may be familiar with the song written by Bobby McFerrin titled 'Don't Worry, Be Happy'. Now he probably wasn't singing about what we're talking about but it's true. If you know the Lord Jesus as your Saviour then don't worry, be happy. In those tough situations you will be glad because you have God. That doesn't mean you will be happy all the time but you will have a different kind of gladness because you know God will bring you through. And notice the word 'will'. It doesn't say come to Him for protection and you might or might not be glad - you will be glad.

So you'll discover for yourself that the Lord is kind when you come to Him for protection and because of this you will be glad.

If you have discovered that the Lord is kind, maybe you need to remind yourself of that. Bountiful Blessings has created a bookmark to use as a reminder of this truth - God cares about you. Maybe you know someone else who needs a reminder or who needs to discover this for the first time. If you've discovered it why don't you share it.

If you haven't discovered yet that the Lord is kind I challenge you to go and find out more about Him. As I said at the beginning with a discovery comes the realisation that this will make a difference to your life - this discovery has made a big difference to my life so go and see if the Lord is kind.

Blessings,

Becky
